PHM Public Lecture
People's Health Movement Nepal Students' Circle organized one day public lecture on the struggle for health: The history evolution and activities of the People's Health Movement by Prof. Dr. David Sanders, Director of the School of Public Health University of Western Cape, South Africa at Institute of Medicine Maharajgunj Medical Campus on 2nd February 2012 at Yellow Building, Maharajgunj Medical Campus.
Professor Sanders delivered his resourceful speech concentrating on the global injustice on the distribution health and wealth .One of key note of his speech was how a can Japanese cow receives more investment in it health than a needy person in Asia and Africa. During the lecture Prof. Sanders said that inequality between the haves and haves not is been widening in all developing and even in developed countries. He suggested some ideas to foster the change towards a world where a person receives quality equitable health care. During the lecture Prof. Sanders briefed the audience about the global people’s health movement and the mottos for its existence. He encouraged the participants to be a part of the movement for better world. It was the first and unique of its kind in the venue of institute of medicine and was praised by huge participants. The program was convened with the huge participation of young public health students, professionals and faculties of Institute of Medicine. The program had the valuable presence of Prof Dr. Sharad Raj Onta and Prof. Dr. Arjun Karki as the chief guest . The students circle is in high mood to continue such activities in the future as well. |

PHM Discussion Forum
PHM-NSC conducted one day PHM discussion form on to discuss on the agendas set for the Third people’s Health Assembly. The participants were mostly students of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine, some young professional were also present.

Agenda Setting For PHA3
People’s Health Movement Nepal Students’ Circle and Professional Circle with support from Resource Center for Primary Health Care (RECPHEC) organized a consultative program on “Agendas for Third People’s Health Assembly (PHA3)” in 7th April 2012 in Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), Gairidhara, Kathmandu.
This one day’s program was informally started with the introduction of participants.Then Mr. Santa Lall Mulmi welcomed all the participants and laid the objective of the meeting. This was followed by presentation form Dr. Sarba Raj Khadka on the journey of PHA from Dhaka to Capetown. Then came the presentation and discussion on the agendas for PHA3 from activist of PHM-NSC. Mr. Hari Aryal ,Mr. Tara Ballav Adhikari, Mr. Ishwar K.C and Mr. Aditya Sakya presented on Introduction to PHM Nepal Student Circle(NSC),Climate Change,Human Resource & Health, Students for Global Health respectively. In the meanwhile Draft of Position paper on PHA 3 Agendas namely Issues in Human Resources for Health (HRH) management and brain drain by Dushala Adhikari, PHM-NSC Global Health and Students’ Involvement by Pawan Acharya PHM-NSC Climate change and health by Shiva Raj Mishra form PHM-NSC were disseminated among the participants to supplement the presentation and also to gain their valuable remarks and suggestion into it. After the presentation, the floor was opened for discussion. And,finally the program ended with concluding remarks from Dr. Sarba Raj Khadka. |

PHM-Theater-The Day My God Died
PHM-NSC has been regularly conducting PHM Theater where we feature inspiring, sensitive, resourceful documentaries and movies of global health flavor. In the same run, PHM-NSC showed The Day my God Died, which is a very empathetic documentary directed by Andrew Levine starring CNN Hero form Nepal “Anuradha Koirala” featured in Nepal and India on the growing problem of Child Sex trafficking, it presents the stories of young girls whose lives have been shattered by the child sex slave trade. The film provides actual footage from inside the brothels of Bombay, known even to the tourists as "The Cages," captured with "spy camera" technology.
Through the film presents the stories of victims such as Gina, sold into sex slavery at age 7 and beaten with sticks and aluminum rods, Jyoti, sold at age12, lead a raid on a brothel resulting in the rescue of seven girls and the arrest of two brothel owners. The film documents the tragedy of child sexual slavery and profiles the courageous abolitionists that need our support. This documentary was featured initially in Seminar Hall of Institute of Medicine and then also featured in Maharajgunj Nursing Campus upon request from students. |
Public Lecture on “People’s Health Right: Consumer’s Perspective”
PHM-NSC organized Public Lecture on People’s Health Right: Consumer’s Perspective from Mr. Jyoti Baniya, General Secretary, Forum for Protection of Consumer Rights Nepal on May 2012. Mr. Baniya has been working and advocating for consumer rights protection in Nepal from long time, and is a renounced person. This program saw the huge participation form students, professionals and faculties of Institute of Medicine and others.
Mr. Baniya gave a highly influential and resourceful lecture com speech on the issues of consumer right protection, its reality and student’s participation to support consumer’s right protection This program was formally started with registration, followed by opening, introduction to PHM-NSC and finally closing remarks proceeding the lecture by Mr. Baniya. |
International People’s Health University IPHU (online) and Third People’s Health Assembly PHA3
Activist form PHM-NSC, Mr. Shiva Raj Mishra and Mr. Pawan Acharya Participated in International People’s Health University (IPHU Online) on Political Economy of Health from 26th April to 21st June 2012. This online IPHU had been participated by more than 80 activists from around the world, and was an interactive, live learning environment where students read, share, discuss and present their views in webinar.
Best upon their performance on IPHU (online stage) they were also selected to IPHU (face to face), form 22nd June to 4th July and Third People’s Health Assembly,6-11 June that will happen on Cape town, South Africa on the University of Western Cape. |
